The Pre-War Site

The Munich Crisis 1938

The Prime Minister, Neville Chamberlain, flew to Germany in September 1938 to meet the German Chancellor, Adolf Hitler. He returned and promised ‘Peace with Honour’. The cheers that greeted him were an indication of the relief of the nation, for the country was totally unprepared for war. Steps were taken immediately to remedy the situation. The War Office insisted that two more filling factories were built, in addition to those already planned, and that these were to be followed by six more. Sites were chosen without delay. The square mile of farmland to the south of Ruddington was among them .
