Building The Depot

Temporary tolerance of an enigma

Having suffered the noise, mud, dust and traffic that any extensive construction project involves, the people living in Ruddington were relieved to witness the departure of the contractors, their machinery and workforce. Just what it was that had been built could only be surmised. The fence and buildings left behind were a huge eyesore that blighted the landscape, and both children and adults were debarred from the place where they had previously spent their leisure time.

On the whole, the local population accepted this as one of the consequences of war. They were prepared to put up with the situation “for the duration”, as a catchphrase of the time expressed it. In fact, the Depot remained a somewhat sinister feature of their environment for 41 years.
