Post War Changes

A post war marriage

Youth Clubs flourished in the immediate post war years and became places where teenagers “paired off”. Evelyn Facer and Peter Bedford played on Elms Park Playing Fields with a group of other children, and as teenagers they joined in all the activities of the Avenue Youth Club. Conscription continued until 1960. Before that date young men had to register for two years military service when they reached the age of eighteen. Peter Bedford was nineteen by the time he was called up. On his return he resumed his job as a baker at Horspools bakery in Ruddington, but he spent most of his working day at the bakery on the Depot. During the time they were parted both Peter and Evelyn had matured and their relationship had deepened. After a while they became engaged, and when they married the best man at the wedding was a friend from the Youth Club.
