Post War Changes
A dramatic dismissal and subsequent departure
The management of the post war Depot was in the hands of a Superintendent whose performance gave rise to doubts about his adequacy in the job. He was required to take a competence test. He failed and was dismissed. This had unexpected repercussions which affected Eileen Selby.
“When the Superintendent left, his secretary, who used to worship the ground he walked on, followed him. So that’s how I came to be the next Superintendent’s secretary. I didn’t want to come out of the typing pool as I liked all the activity in there.”
Extra marital affairs between people who worked at the Depot were not common, but in a few cases they led to broken marriages and divorce.
