Post War Changes

The post war working environment

As a result of post war re-organisation at the Depot, and the replacement of the Commandant by a Superintendent, the working atmosphere became more relaxed. Very strict regulations to prevent explosions were no longer necessary and security was no longer paramount, although passes were still needed by the work force. As vacancies occurred they were filled by local people, including a number with disabilities.

George Holland worked in the office with a man who had been in the army, but had been shot in the eye. Eileen Selby was impressed with two men who worked in reception:

“One had had his own decorating business before he lost one arm, the other had been in the forces and lost his arm on active service. They were two very independent people, very smart, very hard working and a pleasure to have round the place.”
